Chambertin-Clos de Bèze GC - Domaine Armand Rousseau - 2013 - (75cl)

Bourgogne red

The monks of the Abbey of Bèze owned the place called Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin. In 630, Amalgaire, Duke of Lower Burgundy, had given them some land on Gevrey-Chambertin. They cleared them and planted vines in what would later become Clos de Bèze.

It was a real walled enclosure.

The fruits come from two different plots; the main plot being located in the upper part of the appellation.

The soil is composed of screes that are particularly rich in limestone. The plot is located mid-slope on lower Bajocian limestone and Bajocian marl. At its summit, the vine evolves on argillaceous limestones of the Bathonian.

Clos de Bèze is often described as the female alter ego of Chambertin. It represents the elegance and finesse of Gevrey-Chambertin.

It is a complex wine with a deep color and a great length in the mouth. The aromatic palette is very rich and delicate with a dominant of black berries and oriental spices. Vin all velvety and finesse.

Its existence predates Chambertin, but both are famous. It has a touch of extra subtlety, elegant minerality while the Chambertin has more breadth and power.
